Harbor Light Research

Clear research for better capital-allocation decisions.

Harbor Light Research is a boutique practice for clients who need independent, fundamentals-driven work before committing capital.

Each mandate begins with a defined question. The research tests business economics, competitive position, management, capital allocation, valuation, and downside—and makes the key assumptions visible.

Harbor accepts a limited number of engagements so each client receives confidential work, direct attention, and decision-ready conclusions rather than generic market commentary.

The work

From business economics to a decision-ready conclusion.

Each assignment starts with a clear question. The work then moves from the economics of the business to its competitive position, management, valuation, downside risk, and long-term wealth-creation potential.

  • Reverse valuation and expectation tests
  • Risk, catalyst, and monitoring framework
  • Concise investment memos and thesis updates
03 / SPECIAL SITUATIONS

Event-driven opportunity research

Focused analysis of bounded corporate events where payoff, timing, conditions, liquidity, and execution matter as much as headline spread.

  • Mergers and tender offers
  • Odd-lot and reorganisation events
  • Deal conditions and downside mapping
  • Net-return and time-to-resolution analysis

Company names and trademarks belong to their respective owners. Inclusion reflects historical research coverage, not endorsement or a current investment view. The research count is based on distinct businesses in internal project and model-portfolio records; repeat coverage and identifiable aliases are counted once, then the result is rounded down.

Method

A visible chain from question to conclusion.

The aim is not to remove uncertainty. It is to show where it sits, what would change the conclusion, and which risks deserve the most attention.

01

Scope

Define the decision, time horizon, required depth, exclusions, and format before work begins.

02

Investigate

Build the economic picture from primary materials, operating evidence, and relevant industry context.

03

Value

Test assumptions across scenarios and compare the evidence with what the price appears to require.

04

Deliver

Lead with the conclusion, economics, risks, and open questions. Supporting detail follows.

Why Harbor

Independent judgment. Serious depth. Direct attention.

Harbor is built for clients who need analysis they can test—not outsourced conviction or generic commentary. A limited number of mandates allows the work to remain focused, confidential, and directly accountable.

Decision-led scopeEvery engagement starts with the decision, question, deadline, and output the client actually needs.
Evidence over narrativeConclusions are not shaped to fit a preferred answer. Weak evidence and real risks are stated plainly.
Direct and confidentialClients work directly with Emile, and mandate details are handled under the written engagement.

About

Emile Behrtel, CFA

Emile founded Harbor Light Research in 2018. He is a CFA charterholder and senior equity analyst with experience evaluating public and private businesses across global markets. His work combines bottom-up company research, financial modeling, earnings-quality assessment, and forensic-level financial statement analysis.

He translates that detail into a business-owner view: how the company earns, whether its advantages can endure, how management allocates capital, what can impair the thesis, and whether the price offers a rational trade-off between risk and long-term value.

A mandate begins with scope.

Initial discussions should identify the research question, intended user, deadline, expected depth, and any conflict or confidentiality constraints. Harbor Light Research may decline work that cannot be completed independently or to an appropriate standard.
